Course Objectives

The main objective of the MAE-CTT-QoS (Queuing Trees and Quality of Service (QoS)) course is to teach students how to manage and optimize the flow of packets in networks using the tools and concepts of MikroTik RouterOS.

In addition, it seeks to improve the quality of service in different applications and network services, thus guaranteeing a better experience for end users.

Chapter 1: Packet Flow

The goal of this chapter is to provide students with a solid foundation in understanding packet flow within a network, focusing on packet flow diagrams for Layer 2 (Bridging) and Layer 3 (Routing) in RouterOS v5 and v6. .

Students will also learn the main differences between both versions, as well as the details of the facilities and automatic processes. Practical examples of bridging and routing in different scenarios will be addressed and advanced diagrams will be studied.

Chapter 2: connection tracking

The purpose of this chapter is to teach students the importance of connection tracking in packet flow and how it affects network performance.

TCP connection states and their impact on network management will be explored, providing a deeper understanding of the connection-state process.

Chapter 3: Mangle Firewall

The goal of this chapter is to delve deeper into using the mangle firewall to modify and mark packets and connections based on certain conditions.

Participants will learn about MSS switching, mangrove structure, packet and connection marking, and apply this knowledge in practical mangrove exercises for popular applications such as Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, Torrent, Instagram, Snapchat, and Skype.

Chapter 4: HTB

This chapter aims to teach students the HTB (Hierarchical Token Bucket) structure and its components such as dual limiting and priority.

Examples of typical cases will be analyzed and you will learn how to apply these concepts in the management of quality of service and control of bandwidth in networks.

Chapter 5: Queues

The purpose of this chapter is to familiarize students with the changes in RouterOS v6, the features of simple queues, and their general concepts.

They will understand the differences between queue types and how to apply them in different situations, including Simple Queues, Queue Tree, and Interface Queue, as well as study the principles of rate limiting and flow identifiers. Use SSTP clients and servers in RouterOS.

Chapter 6: Burst

The goal of this final chapter is to teach students the concept of burst and its application in the context of rate limiting and bandwidth management in networks. Students will learn how burst can be used to improve quality of service and optimize the use of network resources.

By the end

Upon completion of this course, students will have a solid understanding of the concepts of packet flow, connection tracking, firewall mangle, HTB, and queuing, allowing them to effectively apply quality of service strategies in networks. Additionally, they will be able to use tools like MikroTik RouterOS to analyze, diagnose and resolve network performance problems.

Finally, students will have acquired practical skills through laboratories and mangrove exercises that will allow them to apply what they learn in real-world situations.
