What the student will learn
By completing this tutorial, students will be able to:
- Basic BGP Configuration on IPv6
- Configuring BGP Peers with Providers
- BGP Connection Verification and Monitoring
- BGP PATH PREPEND Implementation
- IPv6 Prefix Management
- Using BGP Filters for Route Manipulation
- Multi-homing and Load Balancing Strategies
- Problem Diagnosis and Conflict Resolution in BGP
Requirements
- Understand basic networking concepts, such as network types (LAN, WAN), network topologies, and OSI/TCP-IP models.
- Know the differences between public and private IP addresses, and how they are used in networks.
- Have knowledge of subnets, netmasks and IP addressing.
- Understand the basic concepts of routing and switching in networks.
- Know how Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS) work.
- Understand the assignment of dynamic and static IPs.
General Purpose
Train users in the configuration and management of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing protocol in an IPv6 network, using MikroTik RouterOS.
This knowledge will allow students to advertise their own blocks of IPv6 addresses to the Internet, ensuring efficient and robust global connectivity for their networks.
Objectives by Chapter
1. Implementation of BGP on IPv6 with a Provider
- Learn how to create a template in MikroTik RouterOS to specify the ASN, AFI and Router-ID necessary for the BGP configuration.
- Understand how to create an address-list to manage the IPv6 prefixes that will be announced to the Internet provider.
- Master the configuration of a BGP peer towards an Internet provider and how to establish that connection.
- Verify BGP connection status and IPv6 prefix advertisements to ensure proper propagation over the Internet.
2. Implementation of BGP on IPv6 with Two Providers
- Delve into the management of multiple Internet connections through BGP configuration with two providers, improving network redundancy and availability.
- Learn to manage and selectively advertise IPv6 prefixes to different providers depending on the desired routing strategy.
- Strengthen skills to verify and monitor BGP connections and prefix advertisements to multiple providers.
3. Implementation of BGP PATH PREPEND in IPv6
- Understand how BGP filters work in MikroTik RouterOS and how they can influence route selection by other autonomous systems.
- Understand the role of the AS-Path attribute in BGP route selection and how to manipulate it to influence Internet traffic.
- Learn how to apply the BGP PATH PREPEND filter to modify the AS-Path of route announcements, with the aim of managing the flow of incoming traffic to the network.
At the end of this Tutorial
Students will have acquired practical and theoretical skills to implement and manage the BGP protocol on an IPv6 network using MikroTik RouterOS. They will be trained to:
- Set up BGP connections with one or more Internet providers, maximizing network efficiency and redundancy.
- Effectively handle IPv6 prefix advertisements, ensuring correct visibility and connectivity on the Internet.
- Use advanced techniques such as BGP PATH PREPEND to influence the routing decisions of other networks, thus optimizing incoming traffic.
- Diagnose and resolve problems related to BGP configuration, improving network security and stability.
Botton line
This tutorial will equip students with the necessary skills to manage the global connectivity of their IPv6 networks, making use of the powerful functionalities offered by BGP in MikroTik RouterOS.
