Book Objectives
The BGP and MPLS with MikroTik RouterOS Book has the general objective of providing readers with a solid foundation in routing, routing protocols, and traffic engineering techniques using MikroTik devices.
Chapter 1: Introduction
In this chapter, readers will get an overview of the book's content and learn about the basics of autonomous systems (AS), AS assignment, 16-bit and 32-bit autonomous system number (ASN) tables, and relationships between ACE. Likewise, the importance of BGP protocols will be established.
Chapter 2: BGP Scenarios
Here, different routing scenarios using BGP protocol will be explored such as Single Homed, Multi Homed, Dual Homed, Single Multi-Homed and Dual Multi Homed. In addition, BGP connection tracking and route distribution will be addressed, enriching the content with practical examples.
Chapter 3: eBGP/iBGP
This chapter focuses on exterior (eBGP) and interior (iBGP) routing protocols. Readers will learn about Loopback interfaces and multi-hop configurations, essential in implementing BGP. This chapter provides a detailed introduction to the MPLS architecture and its key components. Topics such as the MPLS header, the MPLS label stack, the transmission of packets over the network, configuration of MPLS static labels and the LDP protocol and its configuration will be covered.
Chapter 6: L3VPN VRF
In this section, readers will delve into the world of virtual private networks (VRF) and virtual wide area networks (L3VPN). Concepts such as route leaking, VRF management, Router Distinguisher will be explored, and examples of basic VRF configurations will be provided.
Chapter 7: L2VPN VPLS
This chapter introduces Layer 2 Virtual Private Networks (L2VPN) and the Ethernet emulation service provided by VPLS (Virtual Private LAN Service). The properties and characteristics of VPLS, VPLS configuration using BGP, the effect of Penultimate hop popping on VPLS tunnels and the concept of VPLS bridges will be discussed.
Chapter 8: Traffic Engineering
In this last chapter, traffic engineering and its capabilities and components are analyzed. Readers will explore the RSVP (Resource Reservation Protocol) protocol and its attributes, as well as the operation of CSPF (Constrained Shortest Path First). In addition, topics such as static roads and the configuration of automatic bandwidth adjustment in TE (Traffic Engineering) tunnels will be addressed.
