Book Objectives
This book aims to provide readers with a solid foundation in MikroTik's RouterOS platform and the basic configuration of their devices.
The primary focus is to teach readers how to configure and manage MikroTik devices in small and medium-sized networks, and familiarize them with its features, tools, and best practices.
Additionally, the book prepares readers for the MTCNA (MikroTik Certified Network Associate) certification exam, which validates their skills and knowledge on the RouterOS platform.
Chapter 1: Introduction to RouterOS
It presents the world of MikroTik and RouterOS, addressing topics such as architecture, version characteristics, product nomenclatures and different ways of accessing a MikroTik router. In addition, it covers basic configuration, firmware update, user and service administration, backups, and the installation of RouterOS licenses.
Chapter 2: Static Routing
It delves into the fundamentals of static routing, including concepts such as bogon IPs and routing, network metrics, best route, and the routing table. It also explains how to configure and manage static routing.
Chapter 3: Bridge
Explains the physical and data link layers, physical media types, MAC addresses, IP addresses, address classification, and the differences between IPv4 and IPv6.
Chapter 4: Wireless (802.11)
Focuses on wireless networks, describing IEEE 802.11 standards, frequency bands, channel width configuration, data rates, modulations and MAC Address filtering. It also features wireless monitoring tools and wireless networks in bridge mode.
Chapter 5: Network Management
It highlights network management, explaining ARP and RARP protocols, ARP modes and table, DHCP server and client, and assignment management. Includes a hands-on lab and review questions.
Chapter 6: Firewall
Explains the operation of a Firewall, the protocol map, packet flow, automatic facilities and processes, Connection Tracking and its states, chain structure and actions, filtering by parameters and Filter actions. It also details router and client protection, address-lists and different types of NAT.
Chapter 7: Simple Queues and QoS
Introduces rate limiting concepts and how Simple Queues work. Discusses flow identification, HTB properties, queue types, and the PCQ implementation in RouterOS. Additionally, it introduces new queue types in RouterOS v7 and Interface Queue and Burst.
Chapter 8: PPP Tunnels
It focuses on PPP Tunnels, describing RouterOS and tunneling concepts, use of /ppp profile, /ppp secret, /ppp active, /ppp aaa, /ppp client and /ip pool. It covers PPPoE, IPIP, EoIP, PPTP, L2TP, SSTP and OpenVPN tunnels, as well as configuring routes between networks through tunnels.
Chapter 9: RouterOS Tools
Describes tools such as email, Netwatch, Ping, MAC Ping, Traceroute, Profile, Torch, graphics in RouterOS, SNMP, System Identity, IP Neighbor, technical support, system logs, and debugging.
In addition, it exposes tools such as bandwidth testing, SMS, Packet Sniffer, IP-Scan, Telnet, SSH, MAC Telnet, Sigwatch, Wake on Lan, Fetch, Dynamic DNS, Flood Ping, Traffic Generator and Interface Traffic Monitor.
