On MikroTik devices, you can work with both WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) and WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access II), which are security protocols for wireless networks.
In fact, MikroTik supports a range of wireless security configurations, including:
- WPA-PSK: Uses a pre-shared key for authentication.
- WPA2-PSK: More secure version of WPA that also uses a pre-shared key, but with a more advanced encryption algorithm (AES, instead of TKIP used in WPA).
- WPA-Enterprise and WPA2-Enterprise: They use a RADIUS server to authenticate users, offering an even higher level of security, suitable for enterprise environments.
WPA2 is preferred over WPA due to its security improvements, and is the recommended security standard for personal and business use.
MikroTik has also built support for WPA3 into some of its latest devices, which offers even more robust protection than WPA2.
