On MikroTik devices running RouterOS and supporting IPv6, link-local addresses are automatically generated for each IPv6-enabled network interface.
This configuration is standard in IPv6 and is a fundamental part of how the protocol works.
Characteristics of Link-Local Addresses in IPv6:
- Automatic Training: Link-local addresses in IPv6 are automatically autoconfigured on each network interface, regardless of whether or not there is a DHCPv6 server present on the network. This allows communication between devices on the same local network or link without the need for manual configuration or a DHCP server.
- Prefix: These addresses always start with the prefix
FE80::/10
. For example, a link-local address might look likeFE80::1a2b:3c4d:5e6f:7g8h
. - Scope and Use: Link-local addresses have a scope limited to the physical link and are not routable beyond that link. This means that they are only valid and usable within the same local network, and cannot be used to communicate with devices outside that specific local network segment.
- Configuration in MikroTik RouterOS: To verify or view link-local addresses on a MikroTik device, you can access RouterOS using WinBox, WebFig, or SSH and use the following command in the terminal:bashCopy code

This command will display all IPv6 addresses configured on the device, including link-local addresses. - Importance on the Internet: Link-local addresses are essential for IPv6 network operations such as neighbor discovery and device autoconfiguration. They are used, for example, for adjacency formation in routing protocols such as OSPFv3 or for address resolution in the neighbor discovery protocol (NDP).
Since these addresses are automatically generated and are necessary for basic IPv6 network functionality, network administrators should be aware of their presence and operation, but generally do not need to manage them manually.
In the MikroTik RouterOS environment, this functionality is enabled by default, making it easy to integrate devices into IPv6 networks without additional complicated configurations.
