How to enable IPv6 in my home?

In order to access the Internet through IPv6, our provider must provide us with IPv6 addressing in the home modem. If so, we would be accessing the Internet through IPv6 and also IPv4. IPv6 takes priority

Enabling IPv6 in your home is a relatively simple process, but it depends on several factors, including support from your Internet Service Provider (ISP), your router, and the devices you use. Here I explain the general steps to enable IPv6:

  1. Check with your ISP:
    • First, make sure your ISP offers IPv6 support. Many ISPs have already begun to deploy IPv6 along with IPv4 in a “dual stack” scheme, which allows both protocols to operate simultaneously.
    • Ask if you need to upgrade your plan or device to support IPv6.
  2. check your router:
    • Make sure your router supports IPv6. You can check this in the user manual or on the manufacturer's website.
    • If your current router does not support IPv6, you might consider purchasing one that does.
  3. configure your router:
    • Access the administration interface of your router. This is usually done by entering a specific IP address into the web browser, such as 192.168.1.1 o 192.168.0.1.
    • Look for the IPv6 configuration section. This may vary depending on the model and brand of the router, but is commonly found in the advanced settings or in the “Network” section.
    • Enable IPv6. You may need to select the type of connection your ISP uses for IPv6, such as DHCPv6, SLAAC, or PPPoE, depending on what your ISP supports.
    • Save and apply the changes. The router may need to reboot for the changes to take effect.
  4. configure your devices:
    • Make sure your devices (computers, smartphones, tablets, etc.) are also configured to use IPv6. On modern operating systems such as Windows 10/11, macOS, Android and iOS, IPv6 is usually enabled by default.
    • In Windows, you can go to “Network and Sharing Center” > “Change adapter settings,” right-click your network connection, select “Properties,” and make sure “Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6) ” is checked.
  5. Test your IPv6 connection:
    • Once you have enabled IPv6 on your router and devices, you can check if it is working correctly by visiting a website such as http://test-ipv6.com/. This site will provide information on whether your IPv6 connection is up and working properly.
