Creating backups on a MikroTik device is an important process to secure the configuration of your device. This allows you to quickly restore settings in case of software crashes or unwanted changes.

We explain how to do it using both the web interface (WinBox) and the command line (CLI).

Using WinBox

1. Connect to your MikroTik device using WinBox. If you don't have WinBox, you can download it from the MikroTik official website.
2. Go to the “Files” section. You will find this option in the main menu.
3. Click on “Backup”. Find the “Backup” button, usually located at the bottom of the “Files” window.
4. Choose a name for your backup file. You will be asked to enter a name for the backup file. It is good practice to include the date in the name for easy recognition in the future.
5. Click “Save”. This will generate the backup file and save it to the file list within WinBox.
6. Download the backup file to your computer. Select the file, click “Download” and choose where you want to save it.

Using the Command Line (CLI)

Connect to your MikroTik device using SSH or access the terminal through WinBox.

Enter the following command to create a backup file

/system backup save name=mybackup.backup

Replaces mybackup.backup with whatever name you want for your backup file, including the date may be helpful.

To download the backup file, you can use WinBox as described above, or if you have access to your MikroTik's file system through another means (such as FTP), you can transfer the file to your computer.

Additional considerations

• MikroTik backup files are specific to the RouterOS version and hardware model. Be sure to keep your system up to date and keep these limitations in mind when restoring a backup.
• For additional security, consider storing your backup files in a secure location physically separate from your MikroTik device.
• Regularly review and update your backups, especially after making significant changes to your device settings.

Creating backups is only one part of a good disaster recovery plan. Also be sure to familiarize yourself with the restore process and, if possible, test restore your backups in a controlled environment to ensure they work as you expect.
