How can I calculate how many users a MikroTik router supports?

There is no formula to calculate how many users a MikroTik team can support; What you should do is estimate how much bandwidth the equipment should support and what configurations it will have; With the following information, review the results of the tests carried out on each device that is published in the information of each MikroTik product (https://mikrotik.com/products) and always monitor the CPU that does not exceed 80%, this indicator will be your alarm to consider a change of equipment.

Calculating how many users a MikroTik router can support involves considering several key factors. There is no single answer due to the diversity of usage scenarios, router models, and user behaviors. However, you can get a reasonable estimate by considering the following aspects:

1. MikroTik Router Model

Each MikroTik router model has different hardware specifications, such as processor capacity, amount of RAM, and the type and number of network interfaces. These specifications largely determine the amount of traffic and the number of concurrent connections the router can handle. Check the data sheet for your specific model for details on its capabilities.

2. Type of Use

The type of traffic that users generate is crucial. For example, if most users are browsing the web and checking email, the router can handle more users than if most are streaming HD video or making video calls.

3. Concurrent Connections

The number of concurrent connections a router can handle is a key indicator of its capacity. This number not only refers to the number of connected devices, but also the individual connections each device makes to the Internet. A single device can generate multiple simultaneous connections when browsing the web, using applications, etc.

4. Available Bandwidth

The bandwidth of your Internet connection also limits the number of users supported. Even if your router can handle many users, the quality of the user experience will suffer if the bandwidth of the Internet connection is insufficient to meet demand.

5. QoS and Traffic Management

Using Quality of Service (QoS) features and other traffic management tools in RouterOS can help maximize the number of users supported. Prioritizing critical traffic and limiting high-bandwidth applications can help maintain an acceptable user experience even as the number of users increases.

How to Calculate

Since factors vary widely, the best way to estimate how many users your MikroTik router supports is through testing and monitoring in your specific environment. Start by connecting a number of users and monitor performance and quality of experience.

Gradually increase the number of users until you begin to notice a decrease in performance or quality of service. Tools like Resource Monitor and Traffic Monitor in RouterOS can be useful for this.

Conclusion

There is no exact formula to determine how many users a MikroTik router can support, as it depends on several dynamic factors. However, by considering router specifications, usage type, concurrent connections, available bandwidth, and properly managing traffic, you can get a rough estimate and optimize performance for your users.

  1. LUIS RODRIGUEZ

Good morning, cordial greetings. I want to offer wireless Internet service to a starting clientele of 300 people. I would like to know which Mikrotik equipment I should buy, since they come configured with different capacities of equipment supports and receiving antennas for the user. Any other technical information necessary to offer the service; since I am new to the area and I want to venture into the world of communications. I live in Venezuela Monagas State, City of Maturín. Happy Days. Thank you.

  2. Kevin Moran

    Dear Luis,
To be able to cover that large number of clients you will need 5 to 6 sectorials. Now, although it is true, this is an approximate, the selectivity of the equipment is the most complex. The sectorials are divided by antenna gain and by radio power. These two factors are It is essential to know the distance to cover since clients may be at a greater or lesser distance from the sector. Well, an additional factor that must be analyzed is the coverage area. This is also determined by the distance, the greater the gain, the less area you will be able to cover, and normally as a guide you can look at the degrees that the sector covers, for example, there are sectors of 45, 60, 90, 120 degrees, therefore you should generate an analysis in order to know the type of sector based on their degrees to use. Well, once this has been explained, I must say that on the Mikrotik page you will be able to see a very extensive catalog of products, then add some of the links to these products so that you can review them.

These are some of the teams that could help you as a recommendation. First, collect information based on what I explain to you and from there you will be able to have a little clearer picture for the selection of the teams.

  3. Good evening, cordial greeting, a question, there is a maximum capacity limit for plans
when using simple queue, that is, if I have, for example, a CCR 1072 and I want to sell symmetrical 1GB plans, is it viable, or does there have a maximum limit for plans configured by simple queue.

    1. Kevin Moran

      Dear Luis,
There is no limit in quantity or capacity in the bandwidth limitation so you are free to make any type of limitation, however it is important to understand that the greater the number of processes executed on the router, the greater the processor it will consume per Therefore, it can be said that although there is no limitation in these two aspects mentioned above, the consumption in the processor is reciprocal to the number of processes you are executing. When I talk about processes I'm talking about what you have configured on your computer, for example Firewall, Routing, PPPoE, etc.

      Regards,

  4. Greetings, I offer the service by pins and I have this Rb941-2nd-tc device, as soon as it reaches 10 connected it collapses, I would like to know what device you recommend to be able to provide Wi-Fi connection to 30 users or more

    1. Regards,

For equipment for that number of users or more, I could recommend the 750Gr3 for approximately 60 users or if you want something more robust it could be the HEX S. (Keep in mind that these equipment does not have a wireless interface).

  5. I have a MikroTik CCR1036-8G-2S+ with 1500 users with pppeo but the cpu goes up a lot if I turned off the queue they stay at 30 cpu which they recommend

    1. Kevin Moran

      Hi Daniel,
This is normal especially when you work with Queue Tree since the Queue Tree makes the router cores behave as if they were one. This also happens if in Simple Queues you work with a queue tree, to try to manage the cpu of the router. router in a better way, the recommendation is that you work purely with simple Queues without queue type PCQ, however this can cause you to have delays and this is reflected slowly in the client since the PCQ allows processing a large number of packets and allows them not to be generate delays, however this would be a solution so that you can still continue working with the CCR1036, everything will depend on your scenario if you need to work with simple Queues and PCQ or if you want to work with Queue Tree then you have to migrate to a more robust equipment such as for example to a CCR1072 or in turn divide these processes into two devices, one to be in charge of limiting the bandwidth or to perform the quality of service and the other to authenticate the PPPoE clients.

      Regards,
