Limiting Internet speed for a specific IP on a local network using a MikroTik device can be achieved by creating a simple rule in the Queue.
“Queues” in MikroTik RouterOS are powerful tools that allow you to control and limit the bandwidth of traffic that passes through the router, and can be applied to individual IP addresses, subnets or entire interfaces. Here I explain how you can do it step by step:
Step 1: Access your MikroTik
First, you need to access your MikroTik device. You can do this through WinBox, WebFig, or SSH, depending on your preference.
Step 2: Go to Queues
Once inside the MikroTik administration interface, navigate to the “Queues” menu. In WinBox, you will find it directly in the main menu. In WebFig, it will be under the “Queue” menu.
Step 3: Create a New Simple Queue
To create a new bandwidth throttling rule:
- In WinBox: Click the “+” button, which will open a new window to configure the queue.
- In the CLI, you would use the command
/queue simple add
.
Step 4: Configure the Simple Queue
In the configuration of the new queue, you must specify the following parameters:
- Name: Assign an identifiable name to your rule.
- Target: Here you must enter the IP address of the device to which you want to limit Internet access. You can specify it as “192.168.1.100/32”, where “192.168.1.100” is the device's IP.
- Max Limit: Sets the maximum upload and download limit for this IP address. For example, if you want to limit the speed to 5 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up, you can configure it here. You must enter these values in bits per second (bps), so 5 Mbps would be “5M” and 1 Mbps would be “1M.”
Step 5: Apply and Monitor
After configuring the necessary parameters, click “OK” or “Apply” to create the queue. Your MikroTik device will now limit the internet speed to the specific IP address based on the limits you configured.
Structural
You can monitor the effect of this queue in real time from the same “Queues” menu. You'll see the current traffic passing through the queue, allowing you to verify that throttling is working as expected.

- Priorization: In addition to limiting bandwidth, you can use queuing to prioritize traffic for certain applications or services to ensure that the quality of service (QoS) meets your needs.
- Dynamics vs. Simple: In addition to simple queues, MikroTik offers “Queue Trees” for more complex and dynamic configurations, which can be useful for managing bandwidth in more complex situations.
Configuring queues to limit bandwidth per IP is a common practice to manage the load on the network and ensure that all users have a fair and equitable Internet experience.
