When I made a vpn l2tp, it worked very well but when I made a bridge with the device's wireless it caused the internet to be intermittent, why can that happen?

Intermittence in the Internet connection after bridging an L2TP VPN and a MikroTik device's wireless can be caused by several factors related to the bridge configuration, hardware performance problems, IP address assignment conflicts, or even routing problems.

We explain some possible causes and how you could address them:

1. Hardware Performance Issues

  • CPU overload: The bridge between the VPN and the wireless increases the load on the CPU, especially in high traffic, since it has to process more packets. This can be particularly noticeable on teams with limited resources.
  • Solution: Monitor CPU usage and, if necessary, consider upgrading to more powerful hardware or reducing the load by redistributing services.

2. Bridge Configuration Conflicts

  • STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) Configurations: If STP is enabled on the bridge, there may be a delay in transmitting packets while the spanning tree is calculated, which could be interpreted as stuttering.
  • Solution: Review your STP configuration or consider disabling it if it is not necessary for your network.

3. IP Address Assignment Problems

  • DHCP conflicts: If both the VPN and the local network try to assign IP addresses to the same devices, there could be conflicts.
  • Solution: Ensure that there is only one active DHCP server on the network or adjust the address ranges to avoid overlaps.

4. Routing Problems

  • Conflicting Routes: If the routes set for VPN traffic conflict with the routes of regular Internet traffic, this could cause stuttering or even connection outages.
  • Solution: Review routing tables to ensure that there are no conflicting routes and that traffic is being directed correctly.

5. Security Issues

  • Packet Filtering/Firewall Rules: Firewall rules designed for the network before bridging may not be applicable or appropriate after bridging is established, intercepting legitimate traffic.
  • Solution: Review and adjust firewall rules to accommodate the new network configuration.

Diagnosis and Solutions

  • Monitoring and Diagnosis: Use MikroTik tools such as “Torch”, “Profiler” or logs, to monitor traffic and CPU load, helping to identify where the bottleneck or intermittency occurs.
  • Update and Patches: Make sure your MikroTik device is updated with the latest RouterOS firmware and software, as some stuttering may be caused by bugs that are fixed in newer versions.

It is important to address these issues systematically, reviewing them one by one and testing after each change to identify the root cause of the intermittency issue.

If we want to configure failover, we need to have a static IP address. Failover configuration is done by creating static routes and when routes are created, we need to specify the destination network and a gateway. A domain (IP cloud) cannot be specified.

  1. Mikrotik...Hello...I have 2 WANs, the Fail-over is already configured, I also have L2tp configured as a tunnel, I don't know how to configure the L2tp Client (Dial Out), at the time of one of the WANs going down.. Yes they have A video or material where I can help, I would appreciate it.
    regards

It would be assumed that if you already have failover routes configured for your internet, your vpn l2tp client will go down if the outbound route through wan 1 fails, and when you raise the outbound route through wan 2 you should raise the vpn again. In the event that it is not working that way, it would be necessary to have more information about the scenario and the configurations to understand the scenario much better.

  3. My problem is that when sharing the internet with VPN some applications do not work because they do not allow the entry of some ports such as .7071 and others and a static IP
My question is how do I ensure that the manual IP does not have to be configured and what application transforms it into the address IP so that all the apps on the other device that receives the Wi-Fi zone of a cell phone connected to VPN with htttpcustom work for me

    1. Greetings dear Sergio,
Could you give us more information about the exact problem you are presenting and the scenario in which it operates (Routers, APs) with many more details please so we can give you an answer.
