MikroTik products come with the RouterOS operating system installed, which requires a license to operate. However, when you purchase a new MikroTik device, it already includes a pre-installed RouterOS license that covers the use of the operating system, so you do not need to purchase or install an additional license to start using the device.
RouterOS licensing comes in different levels (Level 3 to Level 6), and the pre-installed license level depends on the specific model of the device you purchase. Each tier offers different features and capabilities, for example, the number of VPN tunnel sessions that can be created, PPPoE Client and Server support, among others.
Devices aimed at businesses and more demanding applications usually come with higher-level licenses, while more basic models or models intended for home applications may have lower-level licenses.
License Renewal and Update
- Renewal: You do not need to renew your RouterOS license to continue using the device. The license that comes with your MikroTik device is valid for life for the version of RouterOS installed and all minor updates within that version.
- Actualización: If you wish to upgrade to a higher version of RouterOS after the free upgrade period included with your license has expired (which is generally 1 year from activation), then you would need to purchase a license upgrade. This is optional and only necessary if you want to access the features and improvements of the new major versions of RouterOS.
- License Level Change: If you need more functionalities than what your current license offers, MikroTik allows you to upgrade to a higher license level by purchasing the corresponding update.
Installation and Activation
For most users, the pre-installed license is more than enough to start working with your MikroTik device immediately after purchase. No additional action is required to activate the license.
In the event that you need to reinstall the RouterOS operating system or change the license level, you can do so through the MikroTik system called “MikroTik Account” on its website, where you manage licenses and device assignments.
In short, MikroTik products come ready to use with an appropriate RouterOS license for the specific device you purchase, with no additional installation or license purchases required to get started.
