Usually yes, however it does not mean that a host will always receive the same IP address, this depends on the moment in which the IP address is renegotiated again since it could be granted to a new host that at that moment appeared to negotiate an IP and If this does not happen, the same IP will probably be assigned to the host.
The behavior of the DHCP server on MikroTik devices can be configured to assign the same IP address to a specific client each time it connects to the network, using static IP assignment (also known as IP reservation).
This is achieved by associating the MAC address of the client device with a specific IP address in the DHCP server configuration.
We explain how it works:
Dynamic Allocation
By default, a DHCP server assigns IP addresses dynamically from a pool of available addresses.
With this method, there is no guarantee that a client will always be assigned the same IP address each time it connects to the network, especially if the lease has expired and the IP has been returned to the pool to be assigned to another device.
Static Assignment (IP Reservation)
To ensure that a device always receives the same IP address, you can configure an IP reservation on the MikroTik DHCP server. This is done by binding the MAC address of the device to a specific IP address within the address range of the DHCP server.
Although this IP address is part of the DHCP server's range, it is reserved exclusively for that device and will not be assigned to others, ensuring that the device always receives the same IP address each time it connects to the network.
Configuration in MikroTik RouterOS
Here is an example of how you can configure an IP reservation in MikroTik RouterOS:
- Access your MikroTik device through WinBox or WebFig.
- Go to IP > DHCP Server > Leases.
- Find the MAC address of the device you want to assign a static IP address to. You can view current assignments or add a new one manually.
- Double-click the corresponding lease or create a new one. Set the MAC address of the client and specify the IP address you want to reserve for this device.
- Make sure the lease is set to “bound” status if it already exists or save the new settings.
By making this setting, you ensure that the client device receives the same IP address each time it connects to the network, which can be useful for managing network access, firewall configurations, and other network tasks that require address consistency. IP of the devices.
