The RoMON (Router Management Overlay Network) option in MikroTik is a feature that allows the management of multiple RouterOS devices over an overlay network.
RoMON uses MikroTik's own protocol to create an internal network that facilitates management and access to MikroTik devices without the need for direct IP configuration for each device.
This is especially useful in situations where devices are physically dispersed or in complex networks where direct configuration would be complicated or infeasible.
RoMON Main Features:
- Discovery and Simplified Access: RoMON enables discovery of other MikroTik devices on the network, making it easier to access and manage these devices from a centralized point, even if they are on different network segments or isolated by complex network configurations.
- Centralized Administration: Through RoMON, an administrator can access and configure RouterOS devices within the overlay network from a single point, without requiring individual authentication on each device. This makes it easy to manage multiple MikroTik routers and switches, especially in large or distributed networks.
- Reduction of Network Infrastructure Requirements: Since RoMON can operate without IP addresses configured on device interfaces, it is possible to deploy and manage devices on the network without performing a complete IP configuration, which is useful in pre-configuration environments or in situations where the assignment of IP would be problematic.
- Security: RoMON implements security measures, such as encryption and authentication, to protect communication between managed devices. This ensures that only authorized users can access and manage the devices over the RoMON network.
- Flexibility and Scalability: RoMON is flexible and scalable, allowing it to be used in networks of all sizes, from small offices to large corporations with multiple locations.
To enable and configure RoMON, you need access to the command line interface (CLI) or WinBox, MikroTik's graphical configuration tool.
Once enabled, a device can be configured as a RoMON Gateway, allowing centralized access to other devices on the RoMON network.
This feature is particularly useful for network administrators looking to simplify the management of multiple RouterOS devices, offering an efficient solution for network monitoring, configuration and troubleshooting.
