MikroTik devices come with RouterOS, MikroTik's operating system, pre-installed and already include a corresponding level license, so you do not need to purchase an additional license to get them up and running initially.
RouterOS is distributed with different license levels, from level 3 to level 6, where each level offers an increasing set of features and capabilities.
RouterOS License Levels:
- Level 3 (Level 3): Mainly designed for CPE/P2P wireless access points. Not suitable for Router/Gateway implementations.
- Level 4 (Level 4): Suitable for wireless access points (WISP CPE) and point-to-point links. This level is the most common for MikroTik wireless devices.
- Level 5 (Level 5): It offers support for more simultaneous users and is generally used in larger access points and routers.
- Level 6 (Level 6): It is the highest level, providing unrestricted functionality for routers and servers. It is ideal for projects that require maximum capacity and features.
Considerations:
- License Updates: If you need more functionality than the license level your device comes with, you can purchase a license upgrade through MikroTik or authorized resellers.
- License Transfer: Generally, RouterOS licenses are for a specific device and cannot be transferred. However, there are support procedures for exceptional cases, such as hardware failures.
- Validation and Registration: Although devices come with a license, it is good practice to verify and register your device on the MikroTik website to access support and updates.
How to Verify License:
You can check the license level of your MikroTik device through the command line interface (CLI) with the command /system license print
or using the WinBox graphical interface, under the “System” menu and then “License”.
MikroTik equipment offers a powerful and flexible solution for a wide range of network applications, and the inclusion of the license with the purchase of the hardware makes it easy to deploy and use from the moment of purchase.
